Many people think switching between brands or types of food, or adding new food into their rabbit's diet is no big issue, and that they can switch between foods with no big issue. The truth is, rabbits are very sensitive to even the slightest change in their diets, and if you suddenly change or add a different food, it is possible that the rabbit could become ill or die. Therefore, it is imperative that all changes to the diet are done gradually.
When you bring home a new rabbit, the breeder or rescue should supply you with 'transition feed' unless you already have the exact same pellets in stock. The purpose of transition feed is that you gradually mix more and more of the pellets you plan on feeding and lessen the amount of the original feed until the rabbit is entirely on the new pellets.
When adding or switching a supplement, make sure that you only feed small amounts at first, and then gradually increase the portions each time you feed until you reach the desired amount.
When I get new rabbits, it takes about two weeks or so to fully transition from one brand of pellets to another. But it depends on how much food there is, and other factors such as stress.
